2K Brings Onboard Apex Legends Lead to Rescue Troubled Hero Shooter Project Ethos

2K Games has appointed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the anticipated over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.

Leadership Transition Follows Poor Response

The new appointee assumes the role of studio head at the development studio following the dismissal of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' lackluster initial reveal last autumn.

Recently, 2K president David Ismailer informed staff about this decision through an internal memo, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had revealed the necessity for a distinct vision.

Ismailer expressed that the team is now overhauling the project with a refreshed vision, aiming to address gamer demands.

A Pattern of Strategic Recruitment

This announcement echoes a comparable action taken by 2K Games in August, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to work on the BioShock development group.

Below is the complete message from Ismailer's memo:

Hello Everyone—

I understand you all just wrapped up your town hall - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the good news. Previously I sent you all a update, I expressed the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most dedicated and creative developers we have had the opportunity to partner with - and we’re excited for that partnership to persist.”

Through your commitment and versatility, especially over the last year, you continue to prove that.

The gamer responses from last autumn’s the game demo was enlightening. It validated the appeal of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had refinements needed. It highlighted the requirement for a clearer brand.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve progressed. You embraced the input to consideration and revamped Project ETHOS with a refreshed goal - one that’s positioned to deliver on its potential to our fans.

The belief in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To advance the outstanding progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce Ben Brinkman as the latest Lead of the team. After several months of conversations, he comes aboard us on Monday, October 20.

His management and background in the competitive gaming genre is extensive, having spent the recent years creating and overseeing some of the most recognizable titles in gaming, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, Apex Legends.

I invite you all in receiving him in the coming days. We are all excited to persist seeing the development of Project ETHOS in the time to follow.

David

Background of the Incoming Leader

The appointee presently holds the position of senior developer and head of production at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. Brinkman earlier was employed at major gaming companies in multiple production roles on the Call of Duty games, and, earlier in his career, had assignments at other industry leaders.

Game Information and Concept

Project Ethos was announced in October 2024 alongside a early access event. Then, the developers described the game as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an exciting advancement on the category."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the official summary states. "Face the rivals with unique powers, risks, and obstacles that change every session. Will you withdraw carefully with your valuable rewards? Alternatively take a risk, put it on the line, and trust your team can earn top ranking? The option is up to you."

Project Ethos lacks an announced debut schedule or consoles, but enthusiasts can look forward to additional details as creation advances.
