The buzz about The Game Awards was significant, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The mystery has been revealed. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer packed with intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.
That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This choice of words implies that the team might be building a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it kicked off the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, branching plots, and complex character building—traits that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs only possible with a distinct build with a personal story.
The series is also famously open-ended, enabling players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be completed in a variety of manners, frequently in surprising fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a inventive way.
More to Come
It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can anticipate more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
